From 2014 to 2020, Sir Michael David Rawlins GBE FBPhS FMedSci, a British clinical pharmacologist, served as the chairman of UK Biobank, and from March 1941 until January 2023, he served as the chair of the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency.

In addition to serving as president of the Royal Society of Medicine from 2012 to 2014, he served as the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence’s (NICE) chair from 1999 to 2013.

Michael Rawlins earned his University of London diploma with honors in 1962. From St. Thomas’ Hospital, he graduated with a medical degree in 1965.

Between 1967 and 1971, he taught at St. Thomas’, rose to the position of the senior register at Hammersmith, and then spent a year as a visiting research fellow at Stockholm’s Karolinska Institute.

At the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, he was named the Ruth and Lionel Jacobson Professor of Clinical Pharmacology in that year. On “Variability in Response to Drugs,” he gave his first lecture there in 1974. He stayed there until 1976. He served as a member of the National Committee on Pharmacology from 1977 to 1983 and the Committee on Safety of Medicines from 1980 to 1998, serving as the committee’s head from 1993 to 1998.

He served as the Advisory Council on Drug Misuse’s chairman from 1998 to 2008 after being appointed to the position.

He helped establish the all-party parliamentary group for Huntington’s disease in the UK Parliament, supported by more than 40 MPs and peers.

He received the Prince Mahidol Award in 2012 for his work in medicine.

In the 1999 New Year Honours, Rawlins received a knighthood for his contributions to enhancing patient protection from medication side effects. In the 2017 Birthday Honours, he was named a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire (GBE) for his contributions to the advancement of medication safety, healthcare, and innovation.

He held honorary professorships at the University of London’s London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.

Michael Rawlins was married to Elizabeth Cadbury Hambly. Elizabeth was born September 8, 1940, and is currently  82 years. The pair got exchanged vows back in 1963 and were together for 59 years.
